German Government forces ISPs to put web filters
Germany’s government has passed a draft law for censorship of domains hosting content related to child pornography. A secret list of IPs will be created by the BKA, Germany’s federal police; any attempted access to addresses on this list is blocked, logged (the draft seems to contradict press reports on this point) and redirected to a government page featuring a large stop sign. The law has not yet passed the assembly, however five of the largest ISPs have already agreed to voluntarily submit to the process even without a law in place. Critics argue that with the censorship infrastructure in place, the barrier for blocking access for various other reasons is very low. The fact that the current block can easily be circumvented may lead to more effective technologies to be used in the future. There are general elections as well as elections in several of the states later this year.” (sorces: yro.slashdot.org, and edri.org)

Company internal web censorship and monitoring

picture-3

Safari could not open the page “http://trendpiraten.tv/” because the server is not responding.
Bullshit it is not the server it is you! Company!
That’s it I am angry. Hi my name is Felix and I am one of the blog owners. As you maybe already read in the about section. I am living and working in Korea at the moment. It is not enough that the Korean government is blocking several web pages, no even my company is blocking all kind of web content. It is ridiculous. Today I wanted to visit a German iptv newspage (trendpiraten.tv).
There is no content that could be some kind of kinky or political. Hmm, maybe it’s the word “pirate” that makes this webpage worth to block it.
I am working in an ad agency, which is part of a big Korean consumer electronic manufacture. Our IT that is sitting in the basement (where else) is monitoring all the web traffic and the email from over 700 People in this building. They follow the strategy block every page they don’t know. But nobody seams to care about this total censorship. This is one of my personal reasons to run this blog. If you have similar experiences in you country please share your story with us.

Shenzhen authorities internet-police, censor popup characters

chinese-popup-censor-jing_jing_cha_cha_1

The Chinese government does not have the physical resources to monitor all Internet chat rooms and forums, the threat of being shut down has caused Internet content providers to employ internal staff, colloquially known as “big mamas”, who stop and remove forum comments which may be politically sensitive. In Shenzhen, these duties are partly taken over by a pair of police-created cartoon characters, Jingjing and Chacha, who help extend the online ‘police presence’ of the Shenzhen authorities. These cartoons spread across the nation in 2007 reminding internet users that they are being watched and should avoid posting sensitive or harmful material on the internet. (source, wikipedia)

Betting websites are blocked in Italy
Following a fierce battle between an authority of the Italian State and private european online betting companies over their activity in Italy, a big number of betting websites are officialy blocked for Italian Internet users.

Everything began with the 2006 financial law (Law 266/2005) voted by the Parliament under the outgoing Berlusconi government. The law included four provisions – namely paragraph 535-58 of art.1 – which gave the Amministrazione Autonoma dei Monopoli di Stato (AAMS or Autonomous Administration of State Monopolies, a part of the Ministry of Economy and Finances) the power to bring to the attention of: (a) providers of Internet services, or (b) providers of other data or telecommunication networks, or (c) entities that offer networks or telecommunication services in relationship to (a) or (b), all those instances in which someone offers games or bets where money can be lost or won without having the proper authorization that is usually granted by AAMS itself. Denver airport blocks some Internet sites
Travelers using Denver International Airport’s free Wi-Fi service cannot visit Internet sites that airport officials consider provocative. A report in The Denver Post says the airport is blocking Vanity Fair magazine’s website, the hipster site boingboing.net and others.Airport spokesman Chuck Cannon says officials decided to block access to potentially racy sites when the airport made its wireless internet service free in November. Cannon says the airport would rather deal with infrequent complaints about access than handle angry parents whose children might see pornography.

Critics say the airport is using the same technology used by repressive regimes in Sudan and Kuwait. (sorce: msnbc.msn.com)

The Thai government does implement filtering and primarily blocks access to pornography, online gambling sites, and circumvention tools. Outside these categories, only a few sites were blocked, including an anti-coup Web site and a a Malay Muslim separatist group site.
