ONI testing revealed pervasive filtering of Web sites of political opposition groups and Web sites that criticize Tunisia’s human rights records. Pornographic sites and anonymizers and circumvention tools. Tunisa uses SmartFilter.

ONI found that a large majority of blocked and inaccessible content was specific to Vietnam—either in the Vietnamese language or related to Vietnamese issues including a large number of overseas sites focusing on political opposition and reform.

ONI found that in Sudan pornography was extensively filtered along with some non-pornographic sites which were filtered due to being miscategorized as pornography by the commercial software SmartFilter including the blog BoingBoing which SmartFiltercategorizes Boingboing as a pornographic Web site.

ONI testing found that Saudi Arabia uses the American-made commercial filtering software SmartFilter to block access to the Web sites of Saudi political reformist and opposition groups, sites relating to minority faiths and espousing alternative views of Islam as well as pornography. Saudi Arabia also blocks some global free speech advocates and human rights content.

ONI testing found that Oman uses the American-made commercial filtering software SmartFilter to engage in extensive blocking of pornographic Web sites, gay and lesbian sites,dating sites, anonymizing and proxy circumvention tools and the web site of the Arab-American newspaper Arab Times.

In Uzbekistan, ONI detected a consistent and substantial filtering system that blocked sites that included numerous political sites and a wide range of sites with human rights contents. Web sites displaying social topics was also detected, including sites with religious, extremist, porn, gay, and lesbian content. Several anonymizers, a few host URLs, and one e-mail site were also within the list of blocked Web sites.

ONI testing revealed that South Korea filters political and social content, specifically targeting sites containing North Korean propaganda or promoting the reunification of North and South Korea, as well as a handful of sites devoted to gambling and two sites devoted to pirated software.
