When the “Countries under surveillance” list was introduced in 2008, it listed 10 countries. By 2011 the number of countries listed had grown to 16 after Jordan in 2009, Tajikistan in 2009, and Yemen in 2010 were dropped from the list; Australia in 2009, France in 2011, Russia in 2010, South Korea in 2009, Turkey in 2010, and Venezuela in 2011 were added; and with the three moves from the “Enemies of the Internet” list noted earlier. Bahrain, Eritrea, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka dropped from the list in 2010, but were added again in 2011. Libya dropped from the list in 2009, but was added again in 2011.

A poll of 27,973 adults in 26 countries, including 14,306 Internet users,[19] was conducted for the BBC World Service by the international polling firm GlobeScan using telephone and in-person interviews between 30 November 2009 and 7 February 2010. GlobeScan Chairman Doug Miller felt, overall, that the poll showed that:
Despite worries about privacy and fraud, people around the world see access to the internet as their fundamental right. They think the web is a force for good, and most don’t want governments to regulate it.
Findings from the poll include:
Nearly four in five (78%) Internet users felt that the Internet had brought them greater freedom.
Most Internet users (53%) felt that “the internet should never be regulated by any level of government anywhere”.
Opinion was evenly split between Internet users who felt that “the internet is a safe place to express my opinions” (48%) and those who disagreed (49%). Somewhat surprisingly users in Germany and France agreed the least, followed by users in highly filtered countries such as China and South Korea, while users in Egypt, India and Kenya agreed more strongly.

It seems that South Koreans have another layer of censorship other than the Ministry of Communication (MIC). Flickr has just created a new “Safesearch” policy that “prohibits users in these places from turning off content filters” thus censoring what one may see on flickr sites from South Korea. Apparently this idea was from Yahoo.com, which has steadily been in the process of becoming king “Tokebi” in Korea and has been a hand to censoring flickr in China as well. I guess this is all per the wishes of Yahoo shareholders who do not seem to care about censorship and do not care even when they wrongfully help put people in jail for the sake of censorship. The Korean Hyperbolic and anti discrimination and defamation law put pressure on Google Korea to force YouTube user to register with their National ID-Number to upload a vide or write a comment. In the past Koreans upload insulting and bad videos to video platforms that was driving a famous Korean actress to suicide. This case is used now by the Government and the Cuperpolice to force YouTube change their upload policies. YouTube at the moment just canceled the upload and comment function. There is no solution to this issue now. and also no timing when the upload function is away able again. If every post needs to have a ID-Number. If I think about the consequnseses…I am scared. total online media control of the Korean government.

That’s it I am angry. Hi my name is Felix and I am one of the blog owners. As you maybe already read in the about section. I am living and working in Korea at the moment. It is not enough that the Korean government is blocking several web pages, no even my company is blocking all kind of web content. It is ridiculous. Today I wanted to visit a German iptv newspage (trendpiraten.tv).
There is no content that could be some kind of kinky or political. Hmm, maybe it’s the word “pirate” that makes this webpage worth to block it.
I am working in an ad agency, which is part of a big Korean consumer electronic manufacture. Our IT that is sitting in the basement (where else) is monitoring all the web traffic and the email from over 700 People in this building. They follow the strategy block every page they don’t know. But nobody seams to care about this total censorship. This is one of my personal reasons to run this blog. If you have similar experiences in you country please share your story with us.
